I have found that vets who don't know medicine for exotics and tortoises don't know how to recognize symptoms or how to administer prescriptions if they are to be injected or tubed. They can sometimes treat the turtle roughly, not their fault, but if they are used to dogs and cats then they may have a way of handling your baby that may upset you.

Call the vet and ask if there are any specialists in the area (or surrounding areas) who do exotic medicine and know turtles. Believe me, it is worth the drive and any extra costs. I sometimes travel from NYC to DC because there is an emergency vet there who not only does exotics, but used to own a spur thigh so she really knows the breed and has a special love for them.
