: Hi, basically Coccidia is a parasite (protozoan)
: that has a direct life cycle, meaning it builds up
: quickly in captivity, due to stress, poor hygiene
: etc...of the host animal. Yes it should be treated.
: They get it through exposure to fecally-contaminated
: water/food or environment.
: A vet can test for this with a FRESH (within 30 minutes)
: sample doing a direct fecal smear or fecal float.
: Treatment is orally administered sulfadimethoxine
: (Albon) at a dosage of 50 mg/kg daily for three
: days, stopping three days, then repeating the dosage
: for three more days. Strick hygiene measures
: will be required to prevent re-infection.
: That means, changing the cage substrate very
: frequently, better yet switching to a simply
: replaced substrate such as newspaper for this time,
: and keeping your hands clean, wear rubber gloves.
