I don't....never have except for little tiny torts that have mouths so tiny they can't break through cactus skin on their own...I just toss the pads out whole and they never seem to have any problems...and BTW, you oughtta see the species of opuntia that desert tortoises eat in the wild out here...talk about prickly! Worse than anything else I've seen...tiny spines..thousands of them. Doesn't seem to bother them a bit.
