Heather, If you are a teacher I highly recommend you get in touch with David on the TH list and pick his brain for some teaching methods. Pay particular attention to his attitude. (this is why I wouldn't make it as a teacher)(too confrontational with belligerant kids)(causes the litte buggers to shut down)(now, how would I know this?)
There is no substitution for the real thing. Instead of taking away the option of using a good teaching tool from a good teacher why not help those teachers who don't use those tools properly learn how.
(Or we can use the 'blanket method')(much easier)(less work required)(less interaction)(more control)(we need more control)(control is good)

: :And the red ears were only sold to teachers.
: How did you document that they were teachers?
: If indeed you are following the law, yes you are being screwed over. Apologize for my cynical attitude, BUT, I've been in many a store who's undersized turtles are sold "for educational purposes only" and handed over with a wink because the store owner or worker knows better or doesn't care.

: AND I am a teacher. Most school districts *do not* allow reptiles in their classrooms and many are outlawing all animals in the classroom.
: I work at a private school and not one teacher has ever used turtles in their classroom - this includes our science programs. That doesn't mean no one does, but again, I am cynical.

: :I am not asking for sympathy for me. Whether you like us or not doesn't mean that those turtles should have been killed.
: That is the law *if* you violated it. It is clearly stated. As I said before, if you are truly following the law, then yeah, it is sad.
: If you are following questionable practices, then those are the consequences.

: Regarding your swapmeet comment - Yeah that stinks too because many are violating the law.
: Does it excuse you if you are doing it too? No.
