I've used (and am using) Pinebark mulch. The chips are about 1/4 inch in size. Other options are soil/sand mix or just soil by itself. You can also use indoor/outdoor carpeting if it is under 4 inches. Any bigger and that gets messy. I recomend the pinebark myself. If you had a problem with the tortoise ingesting something you need to address other possible causes also. If you don't provide enough heat or space the little guy cannot reach the activity level it needs to keep internal things working. Then there is water to flush the internal plumbing. (i think you get the idea)

: Wood chips won't help with humidity and rabbit pellets will fall apart and mold in a humid setup. People have used moistened cypress mulch...EJ of this forum had some alternate suggestions but I can't remember them now...hopefully he will post them
