Lianne, I picked up some forest hingebacks a couple of months ago. They were in very bad shape when I got them but they are still alive. Two of them eat very well usually late at night (after midnight) and one is still not showing any signs of eating but is not loosing weight. I treated that one for major abcesses in her mouth which has totally healed. (but I still haven't seen her eating) I keep them in a 34"L 16"W 12"H rubbermaid with 3 inches of pinebark mulch which I dampen once a week buy taking out the tortoises and putting in about a quart of water and mixing it up real good. They have a 100 watt Active UV heat bulb at one end but they don't seem to like it on. I also provide a wad of shredded newspaper at one for them to hide in. Their hanging in there and are slowly becoming less shy. They do seem to have neat personalities. My reptile room has a temperature of 75 - 80 F so I don't provide supplemental heating for them.

: hi everyone
: I don't know whether to use a heat mat or a heat rock as an extra source of heat. I will be using it for a tortoise (hinge-back,erosa) and the substrate that i will be using is a mixture of compost and corncob(bio-digradable substrate). What does everyone think about these heat sources, which is best? I would be very grateful for any opinions on this matter.
: thanks
