This is definately not a 'first time' tortoise. These guys can be nerve wracking. They are shy to an extreem but once acclimated do become active. Try to keep it warm and humid with subdued light. I use pine bark mulch lightly moistened. For food try something simple like romaine or endive. Chop it up. Also provide a water dish sunk into the substrate so the edge is level with the ground. Finally add shredded news paper so the little guy can hide. Then leave it alone and disturb it as little as possible. Mine will eat in the middle of the night.
Now if you have the option and have not gotten to attached to it get rid of it for a box turtle or a russian or redfoot or something like that. They are much easier and interesting.

: HI, I JUST GOT A NEW PET. HE IS A FOREST HINGEBACK TORTOISE. HE IS SO CUTE, BUT HE WON'T COME OUT OF HIS SHELL, AND HASNT EATEN ANYTHING SINCE WE BROUGHT HIM HOME. I AM WONDERING IF SOMETHING IS WRONG WITH HIM, OR IF THIS IS NORMAL BEHAVIOR FOR A TORTOISE IN A NEW PLACE. PLEASE HELP WITH ANY INFORMATION OR IDEAS. THANK YOU, HANNAH (AND HANNAH'S MOM)
