I'm just wondering if this is a desert tortoise.

It could be a box turtle or sulcata or some other species.

I think we need a detailed description or even better a photo.
Size, colors, any pattern on shell or skin, how many claws on back and front feet.Do the back legs resemble lizards (long and stretch out behind it when it walks), or short and stumpy more like elephants. Can it close up completely into it's shell, does it have any hinges on it's plastron ( under shell).

If it is a desert tortoise that's one thing and of course he should follow Annies advise.
But what if it's not a desert tortoise?

Just a thought.

There are photos of various species at the link below. If you could post a photo of the tortoise here that would be a great help. Or since you'll be taking it to a vet, maybe they can confirm which species it is.

Anyway best of luck, if you are sure it's a desert tortoise follow Annie's advise she knows what she's talking about.

You'll find photos of tortoises and turtles here:

Check out the tortoise and box turtle photos, there are more photos linked below.

If it's not a desert tortoise the environment and diet requirements etc could be quite different.

You'll find a listing of vets here to help you locate a vet in your area:
