If you have found a desert tort in your yard, someone took it out of the desert at one tim...it is NOT native that far north!!
Utah deserts are the furthest north they're found in the wild.
Do you by chance have any photos of this tortoise so I can help you to positively identify it?

Yes, it is too cold in Idaho right now! Even the tortoises here in the high desert are hibernating.
I have attached one pic here...if you are from Vegas you've undoubtedly seen one before, and yes, they are a federally protected species under the endangered species act.
: I think I found a desert tortoise in my backyard it's a baby only about three or four inches. I live in idaho and I dont know what to do with it. I would love to keep it as a pet but I'm not sure I can I am native to las vegas area and I know they are indangered down there, but I didnt think they lived this far north. do they? Can I keep it? if so, is'nt it too cold for it outside in idaho...? help.
