Hi Tessa,
why don't you subscribe to an email list, that way help and advise is only an email away.
As Marissa stated you must quarantine any new tortoise you get. That means no contact with any tortoise you already have for at least 90 days.During that time, as soon after you purchase it as possible, the new tortoise should see a vet.
A vet check-up is extremely important , the vet should do an overall check up and test for internal parasites ( worms).
If the tortoise has worms, the vet can treat it for you.
Even if the tortoise is given a clean bill of health, the 90 day quarantine still applies.
If you'd like to join an email list there's a couple I can recommend.
The first one is for all species of African tortoises, including hingebacks. Both lists are at egroups.com, you'll need to register with egroups first.
It's all straight forward and free, you can unsubscribe any time.
The first list is the African Tortoise list at:
http://www.egroups.com/group/African-Tortoise
The next list is a general tortoise list, for all species of Turtles/Tortoises. It's the Tortoise Trust list you'll find it here:
http://www.egroups.com/group/tortoisetrust
Hingeback tortoises should NEVER be mixed with other species of tortoises or turtles. You'll find care sheets here:
http://www.tortoisetrust.org/care/ckinixys.html
Joining an email list is a great way to get information first hand from others who keep these tortoises. Hope this helps.
Terry.
