What she just said couldn't be truer! I forgot to mention: Chanel had a limp with his back legs for months that the vet said was due to muscular leg atrophy, brought on by the sand. Without traction, Chanel and Albrecht were just continually slipping with each step. Chanel had a limp, and Albrecht (who already had a broken leg) wasn't recovering without walking traction. After this, the x-rays, and the dyed shell and legs, I tossed out that stuff, even though I had bought an expensive bulk quantity.

: Sand...may not give a juvenile tortoise the "traction" it needs to build good leg muscles...because this is not the same type of sand found in deserts and other semi-arid habitats. Sand in thew wild can be compact, firm, and difficult to dig through, where something like packaged sand isn't.

: This type of sand can also adhere to food items, and ingestion can be a concern.
