Not all things sold at pet stores are safe to use just because a pet store sales it and bird protecters are one of those things, they are really toxic and should not be used even for birds. Birds have died because of those things. I was a breeder of cockatiels and parrakeets for over 10 years. You need to please be really careful of any thing that has pestisides in it. I don't know what if any thing you can use to get rid of them. Maybe if you called a vets office they would just help you over the phone? Luck!

: i've never heard of it, but i'm sure they can. One way to PREVENT mites is to get something called a 'Bird Protector" You can get it at most pet stores, you hang it up on your cage or enclosure, peel off the sticker on the back, and it has a smell that repels mites and lice. It won't bother your tortoise, reptile, or bird though. It needs to be changed every 4-6 months. 4 to be on the safe side. It's a good idea to have one if your house is at all dusty, or if you have dogs or cats that go in and out. Mites are airborne though, they can come without warning. They are either red, white, or brown, and very small. An easy place to spot them is in a dish of water or on your animal were the skin folds.
