Have to agree with you here! I am in the Mojave, extreme temps here too.
A sulcata I have here...spent at least two years wild out here...without access to controlled temps, water, etc. There was a lot of controvery over this...people would NOT believe me...that he actually survived. SOme actually accused me of lying.
He has been left outside most of the time...I will bring him in when it's wet...which is rare. Temps often dip below freezing in the winter time here...but he's fine, he snoozes through it and awakens to bask during the day.
I think a lot of health problems could be avoided if people did NOT coddle tortoises so much! They're far more intelligent than people think...and sulcata....can and do survie outside of the temps most ppl post. Problem is a lot of the ppl posting this info got it from elsewhere...and haven't ever cared for a Sulcata in this type of an environment. The tortoise I've had here for nearly two years has never had a health problem...he's the picture of health. The only other time he does come in is if temps are going to be below 15F...and only because I've monitored his burrow...it still needs to be a bit deeper, and we'll take care of that in the spring time.
