People always advise me...just throw some lettuce in the back yard, left over salad from dinner will work.
And notice it was always people who "used to have a turtle" who share their wealth of knowledge. Ask them how long in the enormous lifespan of a turtle or tortoise they were able to keep it alive. It is usually one of three answers.
1. It died.
2. It disappeared/escaped/dug out one day
3. Or a variation of "My brother/cousin (substitute any juvenile male here) did x, y, or z
to it..."
