In Reply to: Russian Tortoise shell groove is he growing? posted by Mark and Yvonne Mancusi on January 07, 2001 at 09:46:32:
This is normal growth. My opinion on the feeding is that your feeding schedule should not be a problem as long as the animal has the conditions to properly process the food. Make sure the little guy is warm, has plenty of water and lots of room to run around. If the growth you have is even with the existing growth you have no concern. If it is slightly recessed you might want to adjust something. (heat, calcium content, water, even food.)

: We are recent Russian Tortoise owners and believe that our tortoise is about 3 years old. He is about 5 inches in diameter and eats daily (although I have read on your site that we should perhaps go to 3X per week). We recently observed that there is a light colored groove about 1/4 inch up from where the top and bottom shell meet. This groove goes all around the entire shell of the tort. Is this a problem? Is he growing? Please advise!!
: Thanks, M&Y
