Jen,
Charlie's previous owners were going to dump him out in some wooded area.
They overdosed him with Baytril then didn't know what to do and still didn't want to take him to a vet :(
Word seems to have gotten around that I'll take these poor creatures, but it's not easy.
My husband doesn't want anymore, although he gives in when it come to sulcatas ( his favorite).
And I don't have room for more enclosures, even the front yard is becoming like a jig saw puzzle of oddly shaped enclosures. Hastily built in any remaining area for some poor tort/turt who has just come in and must be quarantined.I avoid pet stores completely or I know i'd be bringing home even more sick ones.
The one thing in my favor is that I've finaly found a wonderful vet. She is very reasonable, very gentle with the torts/turts and doesn't go overboard on the drugs.
All Charlie is to get is two drops of Cod liver oil twice a week. Soaked twice daily and fed a healthy diet.
Charlie has obviously suffered in the past, he's deformed , scared, pitted and only has one scute left on his carapace that's fully intact. The rest have long since lost most or all of the brown surface. He's a fighter though.
Oddly enough I recieved another box turtle with the same type of carapace problems a couple of months ago.But nothing like poor Charlie.
Anyway I mentioned to my vet that she must think I'm some kind of lunitic. But she informed me that I'm not the only person she knows who takes in unwanted torts/turts. So there are more nuts like me out here :)
Terry.
