Gary,
many pet stores give out terrible advise when it comes to tortoise care/housing etc.

Can you explain exactly how you have the tortoise housed?
What substrate are you using, what are the day and night time temperatures, is there a heat gradient?
What are you feeding it and do you soak it?
Are you using UV lighting, and what other heat sources are there?
Is it maybe too hot or too cool in the enclosure?
Is there a heat gradient, a warmer and cooler side so the tortoise has a choice, ( very important)
Please get back to us with a full description.
