try filling a 300 gallon with it!
The outdoors is just different, there's a variety
of "substrates", from leaves, grass, dirt, sand,
rocks, I mean just everything. Different than
a cage with absolutely nothing but sand. Sand is
abrasive, dusty, and if ingested can impact. The
"sand" outside is packed unless you're in a purely
sandy desert, which I doubt. That's not the environment
of tortoises anyways, more savannah & grasslands,
dry airid, but hardly 100% sand dunes.
Why use calcisand for a tortoise? You don't want
them ingesting it, and you provide calcium from
another source right? They can't eat enough calcisand
and live to get the calcium they need!
Sand is also heavy, which you must realize.
Now the mixture of dirt and sand IS recommended,
I have seen it recommended here. If you can deal
with that, then use it if it doesn't make other
problems like dust.
Calci sand doesn't absorb moisture well, and isn't
really necessary for tortoises, so you are basically
wasting your money on it. I have used it, and if
I thought if was effective, I'd be using it still,
but it's really not necessary, in fact more harmful
than good. Take care, niki
