: : Head bobbing can be a pretty normal behavior, you are right.
: : A little bit more information would help us answer the rest of your questions a little bit better.
: : How big and how old is your tort?
: ...almost 2 years old
: : How long has he been doing this?
: ...2 days off and on..less since I increased his heat..
: : How is he housed now....has that changed recently?
: ...no changes in housing..basking light with 60 watt incandescant..one fourth of enclosure with flexwatt under enclosure with hides on warm side and cool side..UV lighting overhead 12"
: : What temps is he being kept at?
: ...72 cool side..80 warm side..90 under basking light
: : Have you recently had a change in substrate?
: ...no..he is on intact toweling one half of enclosure, sterile soil to burrow in other half
: : Has there been ANY recent changes in his care?
: ...no..soaked 3 times a week..foods without change..good appetite, normal stool and urates
: : The fact that he doesn't do it all the time,
: : AND that his eyes and nose are clear,
: : AND that he is eating,
: : AND seems to be leading his normal life are all very positive and wouldn't lead you to make a rush visit to the ER Vet center. So, that's a very good thing.
: : Also.....consider what might be making him breath hard if there really was a problem. Choices might be RNS (runny nose syndrome....which we already said he doesn't show), pneumonia (one would think he'd look or act very "sick" if he had this....ie, poor appetite), or possibly an allergic reaction to a change in something in his environment, like substrate.
: ....the only thing that has changed is the method of heating our home..from gas heat to electric heat, during the change over it got cooler than normal..I'm concerned that it might have precipitated pneumonia..I added another basking light and put an electric space heater closer to him to increase and stablize the temps. He doesn't seem to be getting any worse, in fact he isn't exhibiting the behavior as often..
: ...so I have a question..the distending of his neck is NOT normal?? This indicates difficulty breathing? I thought maybe it was normal and I just didn't notice it..He made one *clicking noise* several days ago..is this significant? His respirations are quiet..
: I really appreciate the help Jean..I will watch him closely. Merry Christmas..
: Kay
: : Maybe someone with specific Hermann's care is around the house today and on the computer today. Hopefully they could offer some more specific advice.
: : I would just continue close monitoring to be aware of any changes in his behavior.
: : Good Luck and keep us posted!
: : Jean :)
: : My Hermann's tort seems to be breathing a little hard at times. The underside of his neck is distending a little when he breathes..is this normal? I noticed a little head bobbing at times but this is pretty normal behavior for him. He doesn't do this all the time and his eyes and nose are clear. He is eating..but no stool today, his urine is clear but with minimal urates. Am I getting worried for nothing?
