I use calci-sand exclusively for my geckos,
even have the glow in the dark kind mixed with
a bag of sandstone orange right now. They don't
eat it, so it's not a problem and it doesn't
dye them. It's really designed for reptiles that
are insectivors if they are going after crickets
or worms and get some sand in their mouth.
That would be like crickets. Animals that are
eating it (such as Bearded Dragons, monitors)
are possibly lacking some vit. and trying to get
it this way. Not always, just possible.

I wouldn't use it for tortoises, as it is abrasive,
I did use it a bit for Teddy once, but it's
too heavy in a big cage. I just don't use any sand
except the geckos now.

Calci sand can be used for many reptiles, and
for example tarantulas. It's just not for all
reptiles.

As to advertising, they advertise pine bedding
for reptiles and it's not even fit for a dog.
Wouldn't use it even for feeder mice for snakes,
as it causes respiratory problems in rodents
like rabbits and guinea pigs people put on it.

We all know cedar is toxic, yet they sell it.
And they sell cigarettes in a drug store. So
go figure. It's about the Benjamins. $$$
