After reading all the comments, I ditched the calci-sand and switched to Aspen Shavings.
I didn't like the reptile bark (putting the little tyke on those seemed to be the start of my problems). Everyone tell me the sand is evil (except my sister in law, who tells me the guy at the pet shop tells her its bad, but she has never had a problem). So I am sticking to the shavings.
Tonight we went to a shop with a large and beautiful reptile area, and talked to someone there. He told me he also worked at the Buffalo Zoo, so he has had experience with Tortoises, plus he has a Hermann of his own. He gave me some tips, plus reinforced some of the things I was already doing, so we'll see. He sort of recommennded vitamin A drops for his eyes. Any comments on that?
I'll keep you posted on the situation here. If it doesn't clear up soon, the person at the shop gave me the name of a Vet in this area that will treat herps, that I will definately visit.
Wish me luck,
Dan
