A couple of months ago, I was contacted by someone who had a box turtle that had been run over and needed help. I agreed to take possession of the turtle since I knew a number of good turtle vets.

This well intentioned woman had been told that this turtle was a box turtle and to keep it in her bathtub for a couple of weeks and to feed it lettuce and tomatoes. Then to bring it back in a couple of weeks. The vet also charged a lot to see this animal as an 'exotic'. Turns out this box turtle was a foot long female red-eared slider. She was taken to one of the vets I knew who performed surgery on her to repair the shell and who gave a discount on the procedure since it was a rescue. She is now recuperating nicely and we plan on releasing her into a pond this spring where there are no roads nearby.

I can't believe the vet didn't know the difference between a box turtle and a slider and who would give such horrible advice.
