My sister has three tortoises. One is a year old, about 6 inches long, and about 8 lbs., the next is about 3 years old, about 14 inches long, and about 20 lbs, and the third is 5 years old, about 22 inches long, and almost 40 pounds. We live in San Antonio, TX. The weather in the summer is ideal to raise the tortoises outside but during the winters it can get into the 30's and 40's. We would like to keep the tortoises outdoors all year long but am afraid it gets too cold. I would like to get any information on how to build a fairly inexpensive terrarium that will be heated and safe for the tortoises to stay in all year long regardless of the weather. We have lots of land and I would like to make this terrarium anywhere from 20 feet by 20 feet or larger. The walls of the terrarium don't really need to be any larger that 3 feet tall. I would also like to have a fairly large area of the terrarium heated. Any ideas that one may have on keeping the tortoises outside year-round and keeping them warm would be greatly welcomed. Thanks.
