there are two important characteristics that make a big difference in choosing between species: size and climate. if you want a large tortoise that will do well in an arid, dry area then something like the sulcata or leopard tortoise would be good. If you want a large tortoise in a humid area, a redfoot would be great. if you are limited on space or want an indoor tortoise, a russian, pancake, or egyptian would be better. just make sure that you do all your research.
