I received a rescued Leopard tortoise over a year ago that was in a fire. The animal suffered severe smoke inhalation. The resulting infection needed to be treated by a vetenarian and a lot of patience. The animal is now fine and healthy except for some minor permanent damage to the lungs.
Point is, if you don't treat it, secondary infection will set in and you will have problems. A tortoise with a respiratory is difficult enough to treat, but compound this with possible lung damage and it gets serious.
Good luck.
