I am concerned my tortoise has pneumonia. I think he is having a reaction to rabbit alfalfa pellet substrate which I have removed but he breathing out of his mouth and his mouth was gaping when I got home last night. (I was out of town for the weekend and had an animal sitter). There was not nasal discharge though, in fact just the opposite his nose was dried shut. His eyes were full of discharge and were gooked shut. I administered gentocin drops to the eyes and nostrils and the eyes cleared up. I then soaked him for approx. 10 min and one nostril cleared up. He than quit with the gaping mouth and was breathing out of one nostril but still out of his mouth a little. I have continued this treatment today (gentocin drops and soaking twice) and have seen an improvement in all symptons. Two symptons I have not mentioned are parcel lethargy and loss of appetite. His appetite has improved and he seems responsive but, is still sleeping a lot. Any advice? Does this sound like pneumonia? Does anyone know a good herpvet in northern Missouri??
