They cost alot because there are no wild caught imports (like Russians), there are not alot of people breeding pancakes (like sulcatas, & leopards) and pancakes only lay one egg (unlike African Spurs which may lay up to five clutches of eggs per year, with ten to thirty eggs per clutch).
It is basically "supply & demand". There are very few available so if you want one you don't have alot of options. There are simply not enough being produced to sell them for prices similar to sulcatas.
