do you have a captive bred yearling that you purchased from a breeder?
Or is it a wild caught Russian from a pet store?

If it's a captive bred Russian, can you contact the breeder and ask them for more info, if he/she hibernates their Russians.Although most don't hibernate the first year.
A tortoise must be 100% healthy to hibernate.

If it's a wild caught Russian purchased from a pet store, it's recommended NOT to hibernate the first year.

Have you thought about joining a Russian Tortoise email list, I've linked one for you at the end of my post.It's free and will put you in contact with over 70 people who keep Russian Tortoises. So you'll get lots of good advise that way.

I don't hibernate my Russians, but they are housed outdoors in a warm climate. I'm sure somebody with more experience will reply to your post.
In the meantime read the articles and think about joining the email list, I highly recommend subscribing.
