I've had my Sulcata for two years, and the entire winter, she is housed inside on a bedding of rabbit pellets and alfalfa. Sulcata's are diggers, and I don't like using newspaper for an animal genetically designed to burrow. Could it be that the respitory problems came from a drafty room or humid environment? I really do think that rabbit pellets are best, as long as the room or the geographical area is not particularly humid.
: For indoors I use newspaper, for outdoors dirt, sometimes peat (in cages)with some hay over it. Try to avoid dirt with little pebbles that could be swallowed. Hope it works.
