I decided a few weeks ago to purchase a Hermann Tortoise. In preparation for the event, I built a 4'x2'x2' pen, as this was the size recommended by some websites. However, when the tortoise arrived, it was a hatchling (not a 4" like I expected) that is about 2". I set it up in a 10 gallon tank with reptisun bulbs, a spot light, undertank heating pad, and fir mulch for substrate. I am wondering, knowing tortoise's propensity for wandering, if the 10 gallon tank is sufficient, or if perhaps I should move the little guy/gal into the larger enclosure I built for it. Also, the breeder, when I told him about the 10 gallon set up, said that he didn't think heat pads where a good thing, at least for Hermann's. He said it isn't natural to have a heat pad, and that the tortoise gets used to having heat all the time. What do any of you think? What about putting the undertank heater on a timer like the lights?
