I should have said, the most commonly and accepted common name for G. sulcata was African spurred tortoise.
Since sulcatas have become the most commonly bred species of tort in captivity, various names have been given to them.
Spur thighed seems to have taken over from African spurred.
This can make things confusing.
I think adding or rather keeping the African at the begining can help the situation.
African spurred or as some call them (African spur thighed).
Then you have the Mediterranean spur thighed.( Testudo graeca)
If sulcatas are going to be refered to as spur thighed torts at least by adding African to the beginning. Or Mediterranean ( for Testudo) it's pretty obvious which species is involved.
