does it always simply depend on tail length, or is it possible to have a male with a short tail? I almost bought one from a pet store thinking that it must be female because it had a short tail. Then he did me the favor of sticking out his big black you-know-what from the cloaca. Should I be going more on the position of the cloaca on the tail? In other words, if I have a tortoise in front if me that has a tiny tail but the cloaca is far down that tail more towards the tip than the end of the plastron, what are the chances I have a male and not a female?
