I would really recommend something more suited to a tank...a small water turtle would be okay...anoles are pretty cool to watch and do well in tanks...any sort of smaller lizard would probably also be a better choice. As discussed (beaten to death) tanks aren't really the environment to house land tortoises in. Also, exposure to sunlight inside a tank could do some major damage if temps go too high...and sunlight filtered through window glass is devoid of beneficial UVB rays so it's not doing much but shedding light for the tortoise. Additionally, it is very difficult to provide a proper temperature gradient of any kind with a heating element or basking bulb in a 10 or even a 20 gallon tank. Why don't you get a small RES to start with if you want a chelonian?
