Hi Leslie,
oedema is swelling, and yes you would look in his mouth for pale mucous membranes, or have the vet do it.
If he was in a small enclosure he could be bored, my two outside have a daily routine.
Wake up around 9-10, get out of their holes, cruise around, bask, hang out for food.
Then they head into the shade until the afternoon, back out cruise around, at about 5pm they head back to their holes/burrows.
They eat everyday.
If you saw urates on friday and he is pooping, and there's no swelling he's probably fine.
Maybe he'll perk up now he has more room.
Have you tried the endive, romaine mix with grated carrots and squash on top?
Mine love it,they gobble it all down.
Anyway if you do become worried I think blood work is the next step.
Here's Sharons reply to my email to the tortoise trust list about blood work.Sharon keeps a variety of torts/turts, including Russians:

Hi Terry,
I think you mean a CBC which is short for "Complete Blood Count". This
gives you a count of both the red blood cells and the white blood cells and
a differential of the latter(ie- breaks down into percentages what type of
white blood cells are there). I also strongly recommend a CHEM panel which
tests blood levels of various electrolytes and enzymes that can assist in
evaluating kidney and liver function, and or help rule out or rule in other
disorders. These tests run together can give a veterinarian quite a bit of
info to work with. ANd of course, my philosophy is that if you are going to
stick the poor tortoise or turtle with a needle anyway, you might as well
draw enough blood for both tests right then and just run them.

Take care and hope the tortoise is okay!

Hope this helps,
Terry.
