Our female Russian tortoise laid 3 eggs today following about a week of restlessness and digging with her hind feet. This was the first time we have noticed this behavior, so we are reasonably sure this was her first clutch (but she may have snuck a clutch past us while in her outdoor enclosure this summer). Given that Russians are known to lay multiple clutches in a year, would it be safe to hibernate her when she may be in an off-kilter breeding season? We usually prepare her and her mate for hibernation in mid to late November, then hibernate them starting in mid December. Would hibernation cause a problem if she was developing a second fertile clutch of eggs when she entered hibernation? Should we skip or delay her hibernation this year?
