I couldn't figure out why this was used for deworming,
but didn't want to bring it up now that it's essentially
too late for this poor guy. We used Panacur when
I first got Theo after he tested positive, since
then he's been negative each time. Of course it was
just mixed in with his food, the way tortoises are
easily dewormed anyways - orally.

When I got out my reptile parasite books, I couldn't
find this listed like you said, and also you're right
about the Ivermectin (potentially lethal).

But somehow I HAVE heard of something being used
as an antibiotic and dewormer, maybe incorrectly,
I can't remember where/when I have heard something
very similar to this??? Maybe I'm thinking of
some vets using Ivermectin to also treat mites in
a spray form? Can't think of it now. I have heard
of Ivermectin being injected in snakes as a
deworming agent, I wouldnt' do it since it has a
low margin of error.

In case anyone thinks vets don't make mistakes,
I had a copperhead overdosed on Ivermectin, with
an "ooh, sorry" from this (other) vet. duh, thanks.
He had dosed him at 50 grams body weight, when in
fact he was only 36 grams, enough of a difference
to put him into a neurological shock and he died
of respiratory arrest.

I trust my vet now, I trust her a lot, so much that
she does not mind me bringing my books and we both
look at them if I have questions, she also lets me
look under the microscope. We compare weights that
we come up with on the animals also. There's a new
lady vet working at her clinic that has a lot of
experience with Gopher Torts, and she saw Teddy
last time we were there. niki
