Hi JP,
many wild caught tortoises are infested with parasites. Under normal conditions/in the wild they can handle most of these parasites.
But the stress of capture, the conditions they endure during shipping, temperature extremes, over crowding, cross contamination can have a terrible efect on the tortoise. The parasites take over and the tortoises system can't handle it.
The most common cause of death in newly imported/wild tortoises is usualy conected in some way to parasites.
I'm glad you found this forum and got some good advise, and acted on it.
Make sure you keep the tortoise well hydrated during treatment, daily soaks in very shallow luke warm water. And of course make sure she always has clean drinking/soaking water available.
She's in good hands now, so she has a chance. It can take several treatments before she's worm free. Keep her enclosure very clean, change the substrate frequently so she can't reinfest herself.
Did the vet test her urine for Hexamita?
If not I really do recommend you have that done.
Anyway, best of luck I'm sorry you had to learn the hard way, by losing the male.
But hopfully with help from you, the female will pull through.
Thanks for the update.
Terry.
