Hi,
a lot depends on the climate you live in, can you house the tortoises outdoors. Or will you be housing them indoors?
Tortoises need a lot of room , so if you breed, you will need to provide spacious enclosures for both the adults and seperate enclosures for the hatchlings.
Do you want a species that stays small, or a larger species?
Do you want a species that hibernates or not?
Can you deal with all the hatchlings, some species can lay up to 40 eggs each clutch?!!
Tell us a bit more about the climate in your area, some tortoises need humidity, others an arid habitat.
And give up more info on the type of tortoise you're looking for.
Some stay smallish, around 7"-9" others are bigger than 2' as adults.
There's quite a bit to be taken into consideration. Obviously you want to start with adults, and with some species adults can be hard to obtain.
Some species are over bred in captivity and the market flooded with hatchlings, such as the sulcata tortoise.Others are harder to breed and captive bred hatchlings not as common .Also I suggest doing your own research, before purchasing any tortoise. The Tortoise Trust web site is a good place to start. Also check out the other web sites in the *links* section at the Tortoise Trust.
Give us more info on the type of tortoise you're looking for.
Terry.
