An easy tortoise is a sulcata but they get BIG. Another would be a Russian or Greek tortoise.
If the child is, say, 10 or under you will obviously have to supervise closely. 4 or 5 would be the youngest I would consider getting a pet tortoise/turtle for. I have a 5 year old who helps me maintain my collection with no problem. I, of course, provide the direction. This makes for a good opportunity for both of us to interact and for me to teach her.
Tortoises and turtles are one of the more labor intensive pets to keep because of their special needs but with that labor comes a greater reward when you relize just how much you can learn from this simple pet. As just an idea, you will learn about physiology, nutrition and physics just to name some items. It could be quite fun if you and your child get into it.
If your looking for something simple, get a cat.
