Rick, If you've ever seen where JM comes from you would realize that you do not 'simply' rake off the first couple of inches of rock. Picture this. The volcanic rock that they sell in petco for fishtanks. One inch to 1 foot in dia. That is the normal substrate on Gran Canaria and most if not all of the Canarys. (Sand and dirt is litteraly a comodity) A friend told me some property in Las Palmas went for millions not because of location but because there was sand on the lot which was sold for more than the property was worth.)
But you are so right that a leopard will nest where it wants. What the deciding factor is I can hardly guess. I have 3 nesting females. They all nest within 3 feet of previous nests. All three in different quadrants of the yard. One of them nests in an area that I seperated from the main yard. I have to pick her up and place her in that area when I see that she wants to nest. Whe then will nest. She has done this 3 times now.
(sorry for showing off)
I just got back from the canarys and it was an exciting trip.
(sorry we couldn't hook up JM but we went to Gomera the next day and I left the Canarys from there.)(got a chance to visit the type locality and facilities of G.s.gomerana)(a real thrill)
