go to the boa forum. read what beau posted on importation stats. we all know certain mega pet store chains (compared with privately owend stores) buy imported animals and have no knowledge what-so-ever on keeping these animals.
sure there is the mom and pop pet stores as bad but most of them are small in number on selling bad reptiles compared to chain stores. supply and demand is the motivation of these chain stores. one needs to lobby intelligently with no slanderous remarks. I've posted all these problems many times on other forums. having 3 petstores and 35+ years in the pet business you are basically hitting brick walls unless you do the mentioning above. and it sounds like some of you are on your way. have a plan of action. get herpers together and write, lobby, visit, and intelligently protest these stores. but come off not as a wacko or extremist but as a organised concerned group or herpers. you are right in contacting head offices and I would go to the CEOs of these stores (they all have them). point out the conditions and possibility of lost sales of sick animals or the pending problem of animals being sick or on thier way to being sick at time of trying to sale. none of these companies can afford bad sales or sick animals. and nor can they afford reputations of. several factors are responsible for these problems with the chain stores. low pay, non-knowledgeble help, prices of imported animals compared to captive bred/born, non-contact of breeders and herpers, (as a breeder myself for the 35 years, I was rarely contacted on buying from captive breeders when I had retail stores). the most positive avenue would be contacting head offices relaying the idea if these chains are going to sell reptiles, why lose money and have bad feelings among true reptile people but get enlightment on strategies of keeping the reptiles the right way in order to sale and possibily boost sales on reptiles. remember though, most of these chains are not targeting true reptile people. they are selling reptiles to mostly ill-informed customers or the customer that wants a novelty animal. I always state that some of the problem has to be blamed on the perspective buyer. again supply and demand.
