Hi,
No, there should be no problems with separating the two tortoises. Desert tortosies are normally solitary creatures, and don't seem to mind being on thier own, even in captivity.
In the Mojave Desert where they're native, they often don't see another tortoise for weeks at a time.
This is the species of tortoise I work with the most these days. You might be interested in joining a Gopherus (Xerobates) specific mailing list called gopherus@egroups.com.
You may subscribe by going to http://www.egroups.com/group/Gopherus and subsctibe from there. Captive care, conservaton issues, etc. are discussed on this list, you might find it helpful.
If you are giving this tortoise to a friend, make certain they do fill out and send in a permit application.
Hope this helps!

: I wanted to know if there would be any negative effects to separating two desert tortoises. I have only had the second tort for a couple months and now a neighbor would like to adopt him. I just want to make sure that the two torts will not be traumatized in any way once they live apart.
