as said before, a 30 gallon tank is not big enough to house a tortoise. if you are planning to get an indoor tortoise, you should get a plastic tub of some sort instead, or build a wooden enclosure. an outdoor enclosure is even better.
i have a russian tortoise, which grow to be about 6-8' in size (males are smaller). they are pretty active and friendly, and can be accomadated indoors fairly easily compared to other torts. my tort lives in a plastic tub i got from target. this spring, however, i plan on moving him oudoors into a plastic kiddie pool.
