I can't help but laugh at this. As far as I know there is no governing body regulating common names. The scientific community has trouble enough with latin names. (which does have a governing body). Some people have tried to unsuccessfully tried to standardize common names with no luck.
I, and many other, still call a horny toad a horny toad. Is this wrong? I don't think so. It gets the point across.
As far as the spelling goes, lighten up.
Latin names there is a right and wrong, common names for each species there has got to be a dozen, which is why we have the latin names. Which common name is the right one? Ask the person using it. If it conveys the point who cares (except for the anal retentive).
