Hi Kevin,

I am in Long Island and work in Manhattan. From what you describe, it sounds like an Eastern Box Turtle..they are a native species to NY and, as such, it is illegal to keep them as pets...especially from the wild. This animal probably wandered out from woods somewhere or someone took it from a natural area and then let it go. Either way, you shouldnt' be keeping this turtle as a pet.
