The secret is to embed the animals in plenty of damp sphagnum moss (much prefered over other substances due to its acidity) - my animals never lost *any* weight during the 4 - 5 month period.
Lately I have been hibernating them in a (secured)
outdoor underground bunker. Of course, you need to live in a suitable area for this so it may not be an option.
