I have conversed with John Richards (Alligator Snapper Foundation) regarding size and range. His observation is that the largest Alligator snappers recorded for size and weight all came from the top of the range (Illinois area) where they hibernate (don't in Louisiana). His theory is that hibernation acts to lengthen the life span of alligator snappers. Perhaps this is the same for tortoises, as it seems that the same tortoise kept in a warmer climate without hibernating would have the opportunity to lay more clutches per year, total lifetime clutches in a shorter period and would not need to live as long. The northerly hibernating individuals laying once per year would live longer to lay the same number of clutches.
Interesting, no? . . .
