: Russian tortoises need long rest periods to live long. They are adopted since thousands of years to hibernate/aestivate up to 9 months a year. They are not adapted to be active and eat 365 days a year, it gives too fast growth.

With this in mind, and the fact that I just got my Tort in May and I am overwintering him. Is it normal for the tort to sleep long periods during the day (with an activity of about - maybe 2-4 hours per day) and eat every other day?
With the winter coming in he is sleeping longer in the morning and going down for the night earlier. Also, his eating is every other day.
I am told that overwintering him this winter is the best, because I just got him, but is it OK for him to slow down, not hibernate, but slow down. And if this is a sign of trying to prepare for hibernation, how do I stop it.
What is an ideal weight for a young (4" in) Male Russian?
