I don't recomend breaking up the cuttlebone because by leaving it whole it forces the tortoise to break off the pieces it can handle and it also forces the tortoise to dig into the cuttlebone in order to bite ahold of it. This aids in keeping the beak trim and the nails also. I split the cuttlebone lengthwise so the tortoise can have a sharp edge to bite into.
