I've seen yellowfoots kept outdoors in 3 x 3' pens in 40F weather, by U.S. Turtle & tortoise Club Members, + many more examples of private collector abuse. This doesn't mean ALL herpetoculturists are uncaring abusers, just like ALL importers don't receive bad animals and make enough money to buy 5 more. I am a living example of this. I split profits 50/50 with my exporters (for a $100 yellowfoot sold, I pay about $1.80 lb shipping/import fees from Guyana, so I get about $30)--they send a bad animal, they make no money. Every box I have received has had 100% live, healthy arrivals--the last had one wooden box, 2' x 3' x 6" high had 3- twist neck turtles 5-6" each in it. Redfoots and yellowfoots are packed in individual plastic lined compartments in huge wooden boxes..Emerald tree Boas are suspended in individual bags in large screen-sided wooden boxes, with 3-4" of space between bags.

Because I share profits with my exporters, I sell for higher prices than most importers. I also worm my animals--all--on arrival. you'd think business would be booming, I tried to do it the "right" way-it isn't booming at all. The bottom line is, that 99% of all my inquiries are interested in price, period. If I were to send $5000 to Guyana in advance for all their permits, I'd get a load of many more-and poorer-animals I could sell dirt cheap. I have the chance and ability to do that, but I don't want to buy and sell crappy animals. I just saw an opportunity to do something better than the way it is being done, and get some quality animals for myself as well.

So ultimately,I will stop importing, and the ratty animals you have shown will continue to come in...Meanwhile, please exclude me from your generalizations.
